Ending date: 23 Mar 2017
This 10-day workshop provides a comprehensive overview of Tostan's award-winning human rights-based non-formal education program, which has worked with thousands of rural communities in West and East Africa.
The interactive training combines both theory and practice, including an introduction to Tostan's philosophy of community-led development, its three-year curriculum, its teaching strategies for changing deeply entrenched social norms, its holistic monitoring and evaluation, and effective program management.
As a participant in the course you will:
- Understand Tostan’s overall approach to non-formal education and community-led development
- Experience key Tostan classes and visit villages that have ended FGC and child marriage through the Community Empowerment Program
- Interact with Tostan facilitators, staff, and partner communities, and learn from other people working to bring positive social transformation to their communities
- Connect Tostan practices to relevant theories of development, such as social norm change
- Explore monitoring and evaluation of a holistic, integrated program
We welcome a maximum of 24 participants, including:
- Development practitioners working in non-profit, public or private sectors
- Activists who want to enhance and refine their knowledge of integrated, community-led approaches to development
- Individuals/students/teachers/trainers who wish to become engaged in social and international development projects
The Tostan Training Center (TTC) was established to foster positive social change through international trainings on Tostan’s unique human rights-based approach for community-led development, and is located in the Senegalese city of Thies, an hour from Dakar. The TTC also hosts internal trainings for Tostan staff, and serves as a space for other development organizations to conduct their own training seminars. The center offers accomodation, meals and meeting rooms modeled after traditional Senegalese houses in a spacious environment particularly suited for interaction and knowledge sharing.
